Indigestion is commonly associated with bloating and feeling of acidity in the stomach. Other characteristic symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, growling sounds in the abdomen, and heartburn. The problem of indigestion is an indication that your gastrointestinal system is unable to process the food you ate.

Indigestion is a minor stomach disorder, but some people do suffer from chronic and repetitive indigestion problems. The causes for this ailment could be overeating, ulcers, weak digestive system, aging, fast eating, gastritis, gallbladder disease, cirrhosis, ovarian cysts, or stomach cancer. If indigestion persists, visiting a doctor is recommended.

There are plenty of over the counter medicines particularly laxatives available for giving you a quick relief from the discomfort of indigestion. But these medicines are a temporary fix and are not as effective as some of the herbal remedies. Also, they are expensive and could come with unknown side effects.  Usually, indigestion is not a serious ailment and it can be treated with simple herbal home remedies.

Below are various home remedies that you can try to find relief from indigestion.

1. Baking Soda

Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is a natural antacid, which neutralizes stomach acids and gives you relief from indigestion and heartburn. The key cause of indigestion is excess secretion of acids in the stomach. Baking soda does a great job in flushing the hydrochloric acid (HCL) and quickly gives relief from the symptoms of indigestion.

 Baking soda with water

  • Take 1 teaspoon full of baking soda in a glass
  • Fill the glass with water and dissolve it completely
  • Drink this solution have a quick relief

If indigestion does not subside, drink this mixture every 4 hours.

Note: This home remedy is not intended for children, only is suitable for adults. Also, the dosage of baking soda should not exceed more than 4 teaspoons per day.

Baking Soda with lemon juice

  • Take 1 teaspoon full of baking soda in a cup
  • Squeeze 3 to 4 drops of lemon juice
  • Fill the cup with warm water and thoroughly mix it

Drink this mixture every 15 minutes until you feel relieved from indigestion.

Note: The dosage of baking soda should not exceed more than 4 teaspoons per day.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is rich in phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and other minerals that help the digestion process. Since cider vinegar is mildly acidic, it breaks down fats and prevents heartburns or acid reflux, which is a typical symptom of indigestion.

Apple Cider Vinegar with Honey

  • Take 1 teaspoon of Apple cider vinegar in a glass
  • Add 1 teaspoon of raw honey
  • Fill the glass with warm water and mix it thoroughly

Note: Do not add an excess of Apple Cider Vinegar. Too much of ACV can cause tooth erosion.

3. Ginger Root

Ginger has been used for generations to cure the problem of indigestion. It is a popular culinary ingredient in Indian cuisine. It is rich in antioxidants called gingerols, which relieve nausea and indigestion. The phenolic compounds contained in ginger ease gastric contractions and irritation in the gastro-intestine.

Ginger Tea with Lemon

  • Heat 1 ½ glass of water on the stove
  • Slice a piece of ginger into bits and add it in water while it is heating. Simmer it for 10 minutes
  • Squeeze 3 to 4 drops of lemon into the mixture

4. Fennel Seeds

  • Roast the ½ teaspoon of coriander seeds along with ½ teaspoon of fennel seeds for 5 to 10 minutes until they are golden and fragrant.
  • Grind the seeds into powder. You can use a coffee grinder or manually powder it using a mortar and pestle.
  • Pour 2 glasses of water into a saucepan and boil it for 10 minutes
  • Add the coriander powder and simmer for 5 minutes
  • Now Add cinnamon and ginger and stir
  • After that, Add a teaspoon of honey (optional)
  • Strain the mixture using a fine metal strainer and allow it to cool down

7. Amla or Indian Gooseberry

Indian gooseberry has many medicinal properties. It has been used to treat eye problems, induce hair growth and stabilize blood pressure. Indian gooseberry is also great in treating indigestion. It has diuretic, aphrodisiac, carminative, laxative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. It stimulates the digestive process and cures acidity, indigestion, and heartburn.

Salted and Dried Amla

  • Cut Amla into pieces and boil them in water
  • Mix the pieces with salt and sun dry them

Chew these sun-dried Amla pieces for quick relief from indigestion and its symptoms.

Amla Juice

  • In a mortar and pestle crush a few pieces of Amla and extract the juice.

In the morning, on empty stomach drink this juice to resolve indigestion and stomach acid. If you find crushing Alma pieces tedious, you can use a blender, prepare a good amount and refrigerate it for future use.

8. Herbal Tea

Hibiscus Tea

  • Take 4 cups of cold water
  • Add ½ cup of dried hibiscus flowers
  • Add 1 teaspoon full of date syrup and stir thoroughly

Peppermint Tea

  • Boil 3 cups of water
  • Add peppermint leaves and turn off the stove. Let the tea cool down for 5 minutes
  • Strain the mixture
  • Add a teaspoon full of honey

Note: Peppermint tea can be made using either dry or fresh leaf

Slippery Elm Tea

  • In a stainless steel pot, boil the mixture of slippery elm and water for 15 minutes
  • After the herb has steeped enough, strain the mixture
  • Add Honey to sweetness

9. Fresh Orange Juice

Orange Juice is rich in Vitamin C. It contains ascorbic and citric acid, which act as antioxidants. Drinking orange juice after a meal greatly calms the stomach. It improves digestion and bowel movement.

  • Peel 2 medium-sized oranges; remove the white membrane and seeds from the carpels.
  • Add the pitted carpels into the blender
  • Cut and add a bit of ginger root, few drops of vinegar and a pinch of salt
  • Add 1 ½ glass of water and blend it in a juicer, mixer or blender.

10. Chamomile

Chamomile is a popular herb used in teas and medicines for centuries. It is known to calm the upset stomach and promote good sleep. It fights bacteria, reduces bloating and relieves stomach cramps. Chamomile is available in the form of liquid extract, tea infusion, and tinctures. It soothes the intestinal tract of spasms and calms the stomach.  Take a ½ teaspoon full of chamomile tincture twice daily to keep your digestive system stronger and healthy.

Additional Tips

  • Before following a home remedy, drink a glass of warm water. Minor indigestion problems are easily cured with properly hydrating your body. Water dilutes the acidity in the stomach, removes bloating and burning.
  • Avoid drinking fruit juices with high fructose as they form gas and create abdominal pain
  • By experience, if dairy products such as cheese, milk chocolate, and tofu make you feel gassy, avoid having them. You can include diary-like lactose-free products in your diet to solve the problem.
  • Eat slowly and thoroughly chew your food before swallowing. Gulping food down causes gas in the stomach and could lead to indigestion.
  • Do not drink water just before or after the meals. Drink it at least half an hour before and one hour later.
  • Do not go to bed just after eating your meal. Leave a gap of at least 3 hours between from the time of eating and going to bed.
  • Avoid eating acidic foods with spices
  • Avoid drinking coffee and tea
  • Quit smoking. Smoking irritates the stomach lining and inhibits the digestion process
  • Do not perform hard exercises on full stomach
  • Use a properly elevated pillow for sleeping
